John Maeda (* 1966 in Seattle) ist Designer, Autor und Präsident der Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).

John Maeda ist ein Grafik- und Interaction-Designer sowie Informatiker, der immer wieder die Verknüpfung zwischen Gestaltung und Technologie sucht. Er entwickelt diverse Software-Tools, Websites, schreibt Bücher und hält am MIT Media Lab und vielen anderen Einrichtungen Vorlesungen über die Verknüpfung dieser beiden bedeutsamen Bereiche.

Law 1: Reduce

The simplest way to achieve simplicity is through thoughtful reduction.

The easiest way to simplify a system is to remove functionality. Today’s DVD, for instance, has too many buttons if all you want to do is play a movie. A solution could be to remove the buttons for Rewind, Forward, Eject, and so forth until only one button remains: Play.

But what if you want to replay a favorite scene? Or pause the movie while you take that all-important bathroom break? The fundamental question is, where’s the balance between simplicity and complexity?

How simple can you make it?

How complex does it have to be?

On the one hand, you want a product or service to be easy to use; on the other hand you want it to do everything that a person might want it to do.

The process of reaching an ideal state of simplicity can be truly complex, so allow me to simplify it for you. The simplest way to achieve simplicity is through thoughtful reduction. When in doubt, just remove. But be careful of what you remove.

An den Traum vom großen Brückenschlag glaubt Frederik Braun (FOTO, 41) manchmal selbst nicht mehr so recht. "So langsam werden wir frustriert und ungeduldig", stöhnt der Gründer des Miniatur-Wunderlands. Der Speicher am Kehrwieder, in dem die weltweit größte Mini-Eisenbahnanlage beheimatet ist, platzt aus allen Nähten. Für die geplante Erweiterung fehlt der Raum, schon jetzt harren die Besucher bis zu drei Stunden auf Einlass. Seit zwei Jahren wollen Frederik Braun und sein Bruder Gerrit deshalb bis zu 6000 weitere Quadratmeter im Block L am Sandtorkai anmieten und mit einer Brücke über den Kehrwiederfleet an die bisherigen Ausstellungsräume anbinden (MOPO berichtete). Doch der große Ausbau der kleinen Wunderwelt wird immer unwahrscheinlicher.

Shortly after the announcement of Peter Zumthor as this year's Pritzker Prize winner, critics took aim at the Swiss architect's focus on the aesthetic and experiential qualities of space and his apparent lack of politics or confrontation with the myriad crises at hand today. Examples include Christopher Hawthorne's assertion that "Zumthor's work has nothing to do with social activism, disaster relief, sustainability, new design software, mega-cities, affordability or infrastructure -- all of which have crowded together recently near the top of the profession's agenda -- [his winning is] a boost for the idea that architecture is fundamentally an aesthetic rather than a political profession." James S. Russell calls the winner a "Swiss Hermit" and says the jury "avoids contemporary challenges" and "left me wishing it had been more adventurous." Clay Risen goes furthest in his call to "Fix the Pritzker," stating, "there's a real opportunity to reorient architecture toward more humane, socially engaged goals. Getting rid of the Pritzker—at least as we know it today—would be a good start."
